Waterpolo Club

Bond University Water polo, resurrected in 093, has continued to grow from strength to strength since its induction in the local club competition.

In these early years, the club was under the comforting armpit of Joel Coward and saw many successes, notably a silver medal in the Gold Coast Challenge. Will Cundy was handed the wheel of Bond Water Polo 2009 and the team entered officially in the B Grade Mixed Competition. Although a niche sport, we have recruited players from a variety of backgrounds from strict water polo to swimming and lifesaving. The regular coached trainings on Monday nights have ensured the learning curve was not so steep for the new players. This year we have established trainings (tick), team uniform (tick), weekly write ups in Scope (tick) and commenced world domination in the pool (tick). On paper, one could consider the above as a checklist of the general bread and butter administration of any sporting club. However, this year we have ticks in all the right boxes. Bond Water Polo has established itself firmly as a club that intends to be around for a while. This year we progressed from a group of guys/gals that haphazardly met on a Thursday night, to an energized squad that are competitive, dedicated and most of all, having fun. The future of the club is exciting. Squad numbers are increasing, with a current surplus of players and predicted influx of new students next season. A potential second team in the competition arises, with a promising group of girls. The club now swings like a delicious ripe fruit dangling from a tree waiting to be plucked by a worthy sponsor. Our last game for the season was as close as a Tasmanian's family tree, losing a nail biting 11-9. We were goal for goal up until half way through the last quarter when they broke away with 2 quick goals in a row. Highlights:  Whoever shouted "little man syndrome" from the bench during some agroness in the last quarter...classic!!! Resulting in a very stirred up opposition centre forward! Ben was his usual brilliance is goals. The defensive game really was sensational, a notable effort by Cat and Em for (in an act of lunacy) going pound for pound with the 100kg+ biggest bloke on their side. Will provided some amusing Oscar worthy "epileptic fits" trying to pull fouls. James was outstanding providing many options up forward and sending some heat seeking missiles from 5m. On the whole, chins up, a whole hearted effort to be proud of. In reflection, the team has grown like adolescent Arny Schwarzenegger on steroids this season. With Bond entering its first ever team, we have now grown to a squad of over 12 registered players, making a formidable machine aiming for world domination in 2010! Going into the games as definite underdogs this season, there is no reason why we can't steamroll them next season!
