Academic Regulations which govern deferred exams can be found here. If you do need to defer your exam it is recommended that you have a look at the provisions.
However, in summary the regulations state that:
- Deferred exams may be granted by the Dean of the Faculty.
- If the student is unable to show that they are unable to sit, complete or perform at a minimum level of their demonstrated abilities.
- The following reasons are normally considered acceptablegrounds for deferral:
- Illness or medical reason
- Accident
- Serious personal or emotional trauma
- events, sporting or religious commitments at a state, national or international representative level; or
- 3 scheduled examinations in less than 18 consecutive hours
- The following are not considered acceptable reasonsfor deferring:
- travel or holiday arrangements
- misreading the examination timetable
- a desire to spread assessment tasks to yield improved performance*
- events and sporting commitments that are not at a state, national or international representative level
- applications received after the deadline
Applying for a Deferred Exam
- Students must apply for a deferred exam within 48 hours of the scheduled exam
- To apply students must fill in a form, available at Student Administration and submit that form back to Student Administration (located under the Sports Hall).
- If deferral is for medical reasons, the student must have their doctor fill in a Bond Medical Certificate, which is also available from Student Administration
- If the deferral is based on non-medical grounds the student must produce documentary evidence as well as a signed statutory declaration outlining the events that occurred
- Whilst the forms are handed in to Student Administration, it is the Faculty who decides whether a student can defer an exam. Therefore, it is important to talk to the Faculty about the reason for your deferral and ask whether they belief the reason would be considered acceptable.
If you are sick during the exam
If you are sick during the exam and need to leave you must inform the invigilator that you are leaving the exam because you are sick
When will you sit your Deferred Exam?
If you are successful you must be available in O’Week to sit the exam. The timetable is not released until the Tuesday of O’Week and exams begin on Thursday of O’Week. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are back on the Gold Coast to sit your exam by Thursday of O’Week. It is very difficult to have your deferred exam deferred and reasons such as difficulties in securing travel arrangements are very unlikely to be accepted.
If Your Application to Defer is Unsuccessful
You have the right to appeal the Faculty’s decision not to allow you a deferred exam, however this is only advisable if you have grounds to appeal your decision.
If you are considering appealing the Faculty decision, please contact
